Mildred L. Bishop, age 96, of Terre Haute, IN died December 31, 2010 at Royal Oaks Healthcare. She was a former resident of Arcadia and Monticello, IN. She was born October 30, 1914 to Lewis B. and Alma (Bishop) Pettijohn.
Mildred was a 1932 graduate of Arsenal Technical High School at Indianapolis. She studied for two years at the Jordan Conservatory of Music (now a part of Butler University) and later earned her degree at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. In addition to her family and friends and faith, teaching music was her life. She moved to the rural community of Arcadia in the heart of the great depression. People did not have extra money for music lessons. So, seeing the need and her love of children, Mildred shared her gift by teaching piano and voice lessons to children for very little or no compensation. She also started a children's choir that grew rapidly to over 150 voices. She and her husband, Shelton produced a spring and fall musical variety show every year for many years. She also coached and took students to regional and state music contests and her students usually did quite well. Her teaching encompassed over seventy years. She once stated that she didn't do this to become rich, but for 100% pleasure. Mid, as she was affectionately known also taught self-respect, respect for others and many other values to all whose lives she touched. Later in life she and her husband moved to Monticello, IN and soon Mildred was teaching again and continued until her health forced her to stop.
Mildred was a member of Faith Covenant Fellowship Church at Monticello and attended Terre Haute First Baptist Church while in Terre Haute.
She married Shelton P. Bishop on November 2, 1941. He preceded her in death May 2, 1987.
Surviving her is a daughter and her husband: Nancy Jane (Gail) Morgan of Terre Haute, IN, grandchildren: Bradley (Vickie) Morgan, Brenda(Mark) Cowell, and Beth (Erin) Chaney, great-grandchildren: Jessica, Joshua, and Reilly Morgan, Andrew, Hannah, and Caleb Chaney, William and Sean Cowell, special niece: Grace Pettijohn Illica of New York, NY and special nephew: Glen Ernest McNew of Muncie, IN and her faithful companion dog, Maizie.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a brother: Lewis Pettijohn and two sisters: Marie Roush and Jeanette McNew.
