Mary M. Warner

–

Cicero, Indiana

Mary M. Warner, age 94, died April 23, 2016 at the home of her niece and care giver, Judy Pennington of Arcadia, IN. She was born June 4, 1921 at Lynnville, IN to Elmer and Mary (Smith) Gentry. She was a graduate of Lynnville High School and received an associates degree from Oakland City College. She then served her country during WW II in the U.S. Army. She was privileged to work under General Patton, General MacArthur and General Isenhower doing administrative work.
She received the EAME Service medal with bronze star. Pfc. Gentry, as she was known at that time, was a member of the royal reception line of the American Red Cross and is pictured greeting and chatting with the King and Queen of England. Pfc. Gentry was one of the members of the lost WAC Battalion that spent 46 days adrift at sea due to the ship's engine failure. They could not transmit the loss of power due to signaling the enemy of their position, therefore had to wait to be discovered. To maintain fitness she related that they had to march miles every day, even wearing out their boots. Mary was a member of the American Legion and VFW at Peoria, Arizona, a former residence. She enjoyed hiking in her younger years, traveling reading and crocheting. She married Howard C. Warner in 1945. He preceded her in death in 1992. Her parents also preceded her in death. Surviving her are two daughters: Tami Couch of Ohio and Jillian Warner of Arizona, nieces: Judy Pennington, Susan Ashcraft, a nephew: Marvin Crim, and two grandchildren.
