Joyce Anna Newby, a compassionate soul and a pillar of her community, passed away on July 30, 2025, leaving a legacy of ambition, dedication, and talent. Born in Atlanta, Indiana, on January 11, 1939, to Vance and Myrtle Jane Witham, Joyce was a woman of remarkable vigor who lived her life to the fullest until her last breath.
Joyce was a woman of many talents and interests. Following her graduation from Jackson Central High School in 1957, she channeled her ambition and dedication into a successful career in history tourism. She retired as a supervisor at Conner Prairie in 2009, where she was recognized as Employee of the Year several times for her incredible work. Her innovative ideas, like the heirloom seed saving program, butcher program, hearthside suppers, and heirloom gardens, left an indelible mark on the institution. But Joyce's talents extended beyond her professional life. She was a gifted hairdresser who ran her own salon and a dedicated 4-H leader supervising the sheep barn. She also lent her expertise to her daughter Dede's flower shop, Dede's All That Blooms.
More than her accomplishments, however, Joyce was known for her kind heart and unwavering faith. She was an active member of her church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, children's choir director, and Vacation Bible School choir leader. Her love for her family was evident in everything she did, and her belief in Christ guided her every step. Joyce also volunteered at Hamilton County Mental Health and was a valued member of the Hamilton Heights PTO.
She leaves behind her children, William (Rebecca) Newby and DeLisa Dede Newby (Rob Hawkins); and her brother, V.E. Witham. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Vance and Myrtle Jane Witham. Husband Charles William (Bill) Newby.
The visitation is scheduled for Friday, August 8, 2025, from 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM at Hartley-Dunnichay Funeral Home, 209 West Jackson Street, Cicero, Indiana, 46034.
