Billie Lee Scherer

Billie Lee Scherer, age 77, of Cicero, IN died Saturday, May 8, 2010 at his home. He was born February 20, 1933 at Cicero, Indiana to Frank M. and Catherine W. (Wyss) Scherer.

He was a graduate of Jackson Central High School Class of 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. He was employed as an industrial engineer at Western Electric at Indianapolis for thirty years, retiring in 1985. During that time he also served on the Cicero Volunteer Fire Department that later became the Cicero Fire Department. For 38 years he was the Fire Chief and now is Fire Chief Emeritus.

He is a member of International Association of Fire Chiefs, Indiana Fire Chiefs Association, and the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association. He served on the board of the Cicero Cemetery Association and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Merit Board. He had been a Little League coach and had helped build the Cicero Little League Diamonds.

He married Virginia Lou "Ginny" (Sowers) Scherer on July 12, 1957. She survives him. Also surviving is a son and his wife: Bruce (Jayme) Scherer of Cicero, IN, two daughters: Lisa Kay (husband, Greg) Gaskin of Indianapolis, IN, Nikki Webb of Cicero, IN, Sister: Helen McKinsey of Durango, Colorado, four grandchildren: Brett, Christi, Eric, and Cole, great-grandchild: Dayne.

Preceding him in death are three brothers: Frank Scherer, Woody Scherer, and Charles Scherer, two sisters: Mae Brandenburg and Ruth Wiseman.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 1:30 P.M. at Hartley Funeral Homes Cicero Chapel with Scott Miller and Douglas Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Cicero Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M.
